School activities

Mini schools

Twice during the school year, teachers travel to a host station or alternate venue to conduct a mini school. Families travel hundreds of kilometres to be with their teachers, classmates and fellow home supervisors for these  occasions.

These mini schools are usually hosted by school families. Pupils participate in a variety of academic, social and sporting activities. We also may have special quests visit.

Classroom experiences

Every year each class is given the opportunity to participate in a face-to-face classroom in Broken Hill. The classrooms are usually held at School of the Air in our classroom building.

The children spend the week interacting in classroom experiences with their class teacher.

The children also stay at a boarding facility at night which allows them to participate in night activities such as rolling skating, dining out and going to the movies.

Excursions

It is important that our isolated children have opportunities to participate in excursions.

Each year, children in Years 5/6 attend a sport and recreation camp for a week, alternating each year between Narrabeen Lakes in Sydney and Lake Burrendong near Dubbo.

All senior children have an excursion also to supplement the unit they are studying.

Children in Years 5/6 visit Ballarat when studying the Gold unit and Canberra when studying the Government unit.

Children in Years 3/4 visit Mildura when studying the environment and Broken Hill when studying Broken Hill.

These excursions provide the children with opportunities to mix with their classmates and experience life and activities beyond their rural properties.
